Marking the 150th anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, his work remains a powerful source of inspiration. The project “Following Čiurlionis” presents a contemporary musical interpretation by two acclaimed masters of improvisational music – Dmitrij Golovanov and Jan Maksimovič – who reveal the beauty, fragility, and grandeur of Čiurlionis’ music through the lens of modern jazz.
The program consists of arranged piano preludes by Čiurlionis. As a historically improvisational genre, the prelude naturally resonates with jazz philosophy, offering fertile ground for creative musical dialogue. The performers incorporate original motifs and harmonic elements from Čiurlionis’ compositions, avoiding jazz clichés and creating vibrant, expressive, and spontaneous forms.
Dmitrij Golovanov – one of the leading figures in Lithuania’s jazz scene. His career is marked by numerous accolades, including a Grand Prix in a solo piano competition, finalist status at the Europe Jazz Competition, the Birštonas Jazz Festival Grand Prix, and the Golden Disc from the Lithuanian Musicians’ Union. He studied with Richie Beirach in Germany and has released over 15 albums, both solo and collaborative.
Jan Maksimovič – one of the most prominent mid-generation saxophonists in Lithuania. Known for his rich tonal expression, emotional depth, and free-flowing improvisation, he is active both as a bandleader and guest performer. His collaborators include Vein Trio, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Tim Daisy, and others.
